The Business Department were delighted to welcome Madsen Pirie from The Adam Smith Institute, who came straight from a Downing Street briefing to engage in a debate with our students. Dr Pirie was one of Margaret Thatcher’s Economics advisers, and therefore much of the Business landscape we know today was influenced by him. He also went on to advise John Major in the 1990s. He has also written several books, including “How to win any argument”, which came in handy for his visit to the Academy.
During the visit, Year 9-13 students discussed topics ranging from Business Ethics to the Brexit, and from Taxation to Transport of the Future. Additionally he was able to illuminate the personalities behind our current political landscape, giving us his take on Donald Trump, Jeremy Corbyn, Elon Musk and Teresa May.
Dr Pirie awarded a prize to Eduardo in Year 9 for the most committed questioning, digging deeply around the issues regarding Sweatshop Labour. Eduardo is now the proud owner of Dr Pirie’s book, “Britain and the World in 2050”, and he donated a second copy to the School Library.
