Physical Education develops pupils’ physical competence and confidence, and the ability to use these to perform in a range of activities.  It promotes physical skillfulness, physical development and a knowledge of the body in action.  Physical education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams.  Whilst developing the knowledge of health and fitness it promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles choices.

Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a variety of creative, competitive and challenging activities.  They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their quality and effectiveness.  Through this process pupils discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences, and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

The PE Department actively promotes equal opportunity for all students to participate in a broad and balanced curriculum.  The programme aims to provide, through a variety of structured developmental schemes, the opportunity to foster a positive attitude towards, and an appreciation of, a healthy life style, a challenge to all and a sense of achievement.

In PE our aims are;

  • To develop physical competence
  • To develop expressive and creative skills
  • To increase pupils awareness of their capabilities and an appreciation of individual differences
  • To help pupils develop awareness of their own strengths and areas for development and to understand strategies to improve these areas
  • To develop knowledge of safety procedures and an understanding of safe practice, including the need for rules and regulations
  • To use cognitive skills to sustain an appreciation of physical movement through analysis and evaluation
  • To develop planning and organisational skills
  • To develop ability to work effectively as a member of a team and as an individual
  • To develop the ability to apply knowledge, skills and concepts appropriately and effectively in a variety of situations
  • To develop an appreciation of health, fitness, recreation and leisure, and the benefits of an active lifestyle
  • To encourage involvement in sport outside of school and to appreciate healthy competition
  • To help pupils gain a sense of achievement and develop positive attitudes towards themselves and others

Year 11

UNIT 6: SPORTS LEADERSHIP

  • Know the attributes associated with successful sports leadership.
  • Undertake the planning and leading of sports activities
  • Review the planning and leading of sports activities.
  • Review using feedback identifying strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Set targets for development – development plan to include aims and objectives, goals SMARTER targets, activities and opportunities to improve and possible barriers.

UNIT 3: APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES OF PERSONAL TRAINING

  • Musculoskeletal system
  • Major Muscles and Bones, synovial joints at the hip, shoulder, knee and elbow. Short term effects of exercise.
  • Cardiorespiratory system
  • Heart, Lungs and the short-term effects of fitness training on these.

 

Year 12

UNIT 1: ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY – EXAM IN MAY

  • The skeletal system – structure, function, joints and responses and adaptations of the skeletal system to exercise.
  • The muscular system – characteristics and functions, antagonistic muscle pairs, types of muscular contractions, fibre types and responses and adaptations of the muscular system to exercise.
  • The respiratory system – structure, function, lung volumes, control of breathing and responses and adaptations of the respiratory system to exercise.
  • The cardiovascular system – structure, function, nervous control of the cardiac cycle and responses and adaptations of the cardiovascular system to exercise.
  • The effects of exercise and sports performance on the energy systems – the role of ATP, The ATP-PC system, The Lactate system, The Aerobic system and adaptation of the energy systems to exercise.

UNIT 2: FITNESS TRAINING & PROGRAMMING FOR HEALTH, SPORT & WELL-BEING – EXAM IN MAY

  • Lifestyle factors and their effects on health and exercise – positive and negative lifestyle factors and lifestyle modification techniques.
  • Understanding the screening processes of training programmes – screening processes, health monitoring tests and interpreting results.
  • Understand programme related nutritional needs – common terminology, components of a balanced diet and nutritional strategies.
  • Components of physical and skill related fitness.
  • Training methods for physical related fitness – aerobic endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, core stability, flexibility and speed training.
  • Training methods for skill related fitness – agility, balance, co-ordination, reaction time and power training methods.
  • Training programme design – principles of fitness training and designing training programmes.

 

Year 13

UNIT 7: PRACTICAL SPORTS PERFORMANCE

Learning Aim A – National Governing Body rules, laws and regulations.

  • Rules and laws, competition rules, laws and regulations, unwritten rules and roles and responsibilities of officials in individual and team games.

Learning Aim B – Skills, techniques and tactics

  • Analysis of the skills, technical and tactical demands of sports.

Learning Aim C – Develop skills, techniques and tactics.

  • Develop skills, techniques and tactics in one individual and one team game.

Learning Aim D – Reflect on own practical performance using selected assessment methods.

  • Review performance using selected methods such as a SWOT analysis, technology, observations and performance data.
  • Activities to improve performance.

UNIT 3 – PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY

Learning Aim A – Understand the career and job opportunities in the Sports Industry.

Learning Aim B – Explore own skills using a skills audit to inform a career development action plan.
