Curriculum Offer and Application

Curriculum Offer and Application Process

At The Victory Academy Sixth Form, students benefit from a broad range of academic, vocational and applied subject choices, ensuring a secure platform is provided for young people subsequently to pursue a range of university, apprenticeship and training options.

The A Level programme provides subjects across the arts, sciences and humanities, and additionally includes the potential to study further subjects at Holcombe Grammar School, a member of our Thinking Schools Academy Trust family of schools. As a school with significant achievement in the Arts, students can expect to excel on both BTEC and A Level Arts programmes.

Our outstanding sports facilities, including a 3G all-weather pitch, ensure our sports students have everything they need to excel in their field. Extra qualifications can be taken in the form of Core Maths and our very successful Extended Project Qualification. For those students requiring an additional step up to Level 3 study, English or Maths GCSE can be taken alongside the main programme.

Aspiration is emphasised at The Victory Academy, with Sixth Form students enjoying guidance from both industry professionals and university representatives, to assist them in choosing the right path for them.  Academic and employability skills are equally emphasised to ensure all our students are ready for their next challenges. Students can take part in gaining work experience by attending companies relevant to their chosen career paths with support through our dedicated Sixth Form suite.  We aim to produce well-rounded and responsible individuals, and our range of charity and fundraising events ensures all students acquire a deep sense of social responsibility.
The Academy has high expectations of, and for, all its students.

As well as those subjects listed below, students have an opportunity to study A Level subjects not offered by The Victory Academy at Holcombe Grammar School under the Thinking Schools Academy Trust family of schools.

To discuss which subjects are available to study at Holcombe Grammar School and to apply for a place in our Sixth Form, please contact Mandi Clark, Sixth Form Administrator, either by phone or email.

Sixth Form Provisional Subject offer Sept 2021

The Victory Academy offers a range of different subjects and course types at Sixth Form, designed both to suit your individual strengths as a student and help you progress to university or work. We also work in partnership with Holcombe Grammar School, giving you an even wider range of options from which to choose.* Students should select 3 main subjects, and an enrichment subject. All courses run for two years.

The general entry requirements for The Victory Academy are 5 GCSEs at grades 4-9, however individual subjects may require particular grades at GCSE. Please check our Subject Entry Requirements document for more details.

BTEC and Applied Subjects

Our BTEC and Applied subjects are assessed throughout the two years via a mixture of coursework, in-school assessments and external examinations.

BTEC Extended Certificates

A BTEC Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level. You would usually choose one BTEC to study alongside two A Levels or Applied subjects, making 3 choices in total. They are mostly based on coursework, with some exams. They also allow you to get more practical experience. For example, in Sport you would develop your skills at playing and coaching. In Performing Arts, you would give practical dance and drama performances. They are an excellent foundation for a career in the relevant sector. We offer the following BTEC Extended Certificates:

  • Sport
  • Performing Arts
  • Health and Social Care
  • Art
  • Information Technology

Applied Subjects

An Applied subject is equivalent to one A Level. Each subject is made up of four units. Two of these are exams, and two are controlled assessments in school. You are also encouraged to apply your knowledge to real life situations, for example looking at serial killer case studies in Criminology. You would normally choose a mixture of Applied and A Level subjects. You could also choose a BTEC subject as part of your 3 choices in total. We offer the following Applied subjects:

  • Applied Psychology
  • Applied Criminology
  • Applied ICT

A Levels

A Levels are almost completely exam-based, although Art, Product Design and Media have coursework elements. You are assessed on the full course via examinations at the end of the two years. You normally take three subjects, but you can select a mixture of A Levels, BTECs and Applied subjects up to a maximum of 3 subjects.

  • Art
  • Biology
  • English Literature
  • Media Studies
  • Product Design
  • Religious Studies
  • Sociology

You also have the opportunity to select an A Level subject from those taught at Holcombe Grammar School.** A Levels offered currently are:
